A 26-year-old woman in Assam’s Jorhat district allegedly killed her husband with a machete due to regular torture and abuse and later surrendered to the police.

The incident occurred in the Silchar area of Jorhat district, where the woman, identified as Guneswari Barkataky, claimed that she had been subjected to physical and mental abuse by her husband, Mudhiram Barkataky, for many years.

According to the reports, Guneswari Barkataky, a mother of five children, two sons and three daughters, reached the Dhalpur police outpost on Tuesday night carrying her husband’s severed head in a plastic bag. She confessed to killing her husband, stating that she could no longer endure the regular beatings and torture she had been subjected to.

“He had been beating me for many years. On several occasions, he even injured me with an axe. I had thought of leaving him long ago but didn’t because of our children. In the end, it became unbearable and I had to do it, else he would have killed me,” Guneswari told media persons.

The incident occurred in the Mazgaon area of Lakhimpur district, where the couple resided. Guneswari allegedly attacked her husband with a machete and then walked nearly five kilometers to the nearest police station to surrender.

“The woman came to the police station with her husband’s head and surrendered. On being questioned, she admitted to killing her drunk husband in a fit of rage to escape his abuse. We are conducting further investigations, “said a local police official.

A local court on Wednesday sent Guneswari to judicial custody.

This incident highlights the issue of domestic violence and the desperate measures some women may take to escape from abusive relationships. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), around 29% of women in Assam have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, and 14% have experienced sexual violence.

The case also raises questions about the support and resources available to women in abusive situations. Experts suggest that more needs to be done to provide women with access to legal aid, counseling, and safe shelters to help them escape from violent relationships.

“Fed up with years of physical and mental torture, a woman in Assam’s Lakhimpur district killed her husband and landed at the local police station with his severed head,” the India Today report stated.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to address domestic violence and provide better support for victims. Policymakers and law enforcement agencies must work together to ensure that women like Guneswari have access to the resources and assistance they need to safely leave abusive situations.

In conclusion, the case of the Assam woman who allegedly killed her husband due to regular torture and abuse highlights the ongoing struggle many women face in escape spur greater action to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
