Inter Miami CF Special Olympics

Inter Miami CF has made significant strides in promoting inclusivity and diversity through its Special Olympics Unified Team. This initiative, now in its fourth year, aims to create a welcoming environment for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their Unified partnership. On July 20, 2024, the club will host its inaugural Unified Home Match at Chase Stadium, marking a historic moment for the team and the community.

The Unified Team Concept

The Inter Miami Special Olympics Unified Team was launched in 2021 to foster inclusion in sports. The team comprises athletes with IDD and Unified partners, who are athletes without disabilities. This structure not only encourages teamwork but also promotes understanding and acceptance among diverse groups. The partnership with Florida Blue, a key community supporter, has been instrumental in the program’s development and outreach efforts.

The 2024 program commenced with a Singing Day event on May 4, where athletes officially joined the team. Inter Miami CF Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chirs Henderson welcomed the new members, emphasizing the club’s commitment to empowering all athletes. The event also featured motivational talks from players and coaches, including midfielder Robert Tayler, who officiated a friendly match to integrate the new team members with existing players.

The 2024 roster includes 16 players, 11 of whom are returning members. The coaching staff, led by Special Olympic coaches Daniel Cartaya and Frank Marion III, along with Inter Miami CF  U-12 Academy Coach Ben Applefield, is dedicated to providing a supportive and competitive environment for all athletes.

Upcoming Events

Inter Miami CF has scheduled several key events leading up to the inaugural Unified Home Match:

  • Summer Games Participation: Several athletes will represent the team at the Special Olympics Florida Summer Games in Orlando on May 17, showcasing their skills and dedication.
  • Team Introduction: The 2024 Special Olympics Unified Team will be formally introduced during the Inter Miami CF First Team match against St.Louis City SC on June 1. This event will provide an opportunity for fans to meet the athletes and celebrate their achievements.
  • Match Against Charlotte FC: On July 3, the Unified Team will compete in an away match against Charlotte FC, further promoting the spirit of competition and camaraderie.
  • Inaugural Unified Home Match: The highlight of the season will be the July 20 match against Chicago Fire FC at Chase Stadium. This event is expected to draw significant attention as it represents a commitment to inclusivity within the sport and the community.
