Mohan Charan Majhi, a four-time MLA from the Keonjhar assembly constituency in Odisha, has been chosen as the new Chief Minister of Odisha, marking a significant milestone for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. Majhi, a vocal tribal leader, has been instrumental in the BJP’s victory in the recent assembly elections, ending the 24-year rule of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) led by Naveen Patnaik. Early Life and Career

Born in 1972, Majhi hails from Raikala village in the mineral-rich Keonjhar district of Odisha. He began his political career as the sarpanch of the Raikala panchayat in 1997. Majli then began his political career as the sarpanch of the Raikala panchayat in 1997. Majli then worked as a teacher at Saraswati Sishu Mandir, a school affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS ). He holds a law degree and a Master’s in Arts.

Political Rise 

Majhi’s political journey gained momentum when he was first elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2000. He won the seat again in 2004 but lost in the 2009 and 2014 elections after BJP-BJD alliance broke down. Majhi returned to the Assembly in 2019 and has since been a prominent voice in the state’s politics.

Key Achievements 

As a member of the Assembly, Majhi has been vocal about various issues affecting the state, including corruption in the mining sector and the lack of development in tribal areas. He has introduced several private member’s bills, including the Odisha Whistle Blowers’ Protection Bill, 2020, and the Odisha Ground Water ( Protection, Conservation, Regulation, and Management ) Bill, 2023.

Majhi has also been actively involved in social functions in every village under his Assembly constituency, earning him a reputation for his empathy and dedication to the people. His ability to connect with the local population has been a significant factor in his electoral success.

Majhi was unanimously elected as the leader of the Odisha BJP Legislature Party, marking the end of the BJP’s four-decade-long pursuit of power in the state. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced Majhi’s appointment, along with KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida as his deputy chief ministers.
